Turkish newspapers are quarreling with the award of the EM 2024 to Germany and attack Uefa boss Aleksander Ceferin sharply. Other international media are also concerned with the decision.
The day after the 2024 European Football Championship was awarded to Germany, several major Turkish newspapers accused Uefa boss Aleksander Ceferin of “dirty machinations” that had led to the failure of Turkey’s bid.
The daily “Hürriyet” wrote, for example, that only one night before the announcement of the winner the score had been 9:7 for Turkey. “But at midnight Uefa boss Aleksander Ceferin intervened and first met with the Germans, after which he ensured that five members would change their votes. Turkey lost 12:4 after Ceferin’s meetings”. How the newspaper came to its conclusions is not clear from the article.
The newspaper “Sabah Spor” also wrote that Ceferin had used his “power in an unethical way” and “worked hard to make Germany win”. The newspaper also speaks of “pressure on five members”.
The “Hürriyet” belongs to the Demirören group owned by the Demirören magnate family, which is close to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Yildirim Demirören is President of the Turkish Football Association TFF.
Other international press commentators rate the awarding of the tournament to Germany as a success for German football:
“El País”: “It was no surprise when UEFA President Alexander Ceferin opened the envelope with the winner. Turkey, the other candidate, has tried hard to compete with the giant, but in the end football is played in the middle of the continent”.
“Independent”: “The competition between Germany and Turkey for the 2024 European Championship has intensified due to increased political tensions between the countries that sloshed into football this summer with the angry reaction to Mesut Özil and Ilkay Gündogan’s decision to have themselves photographed with controversial Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before the World Cup”.
“The Sun”: “WUNDERBAR Euro 2024: Germany will host the tournament after defeating Turkey and reinforcing England’s hopes for the 2030 World Cup”.

“Kurier”: “Exactly three months after the embarrassing World Cup preliminary round of the former world champions of Löw, the DFB was able to celebrate another important victory, at least on the football political stage. And also for the DFB president Reinhard Grindel, who was recently stricken by the Mesut Özil affair among other things, the award represents an important liberation strike for the time being”. “Kronen Zeitung”: “It’s still six years to wait, but then it’s time – Germany will host the European Football Championship 2024! After the ‘summer fairy tale’ of 2006 and the 1988 European Football Championship, Austria’s northern neighbour will once again become the navel of the (European) football world for a few weeks. In the ideal case in the middle, instead of only thereby: Austria’s football national team! Admittedly, the award for Germany can be of great importance for red-white-red in many ways in general”.
